AIZAWL: A mere 10% of Mizos in this north eastern town speak Hindi. An even lesser percentage probably watch Bollywood movies. Yet, ask them who's their favourite actor and pat comes the reply: "Shah Rukh Khan."They love him doing the snake charmer act, in the Pepsi commercial. It's true. The frenzy created when the commercial is flashed on television has got nothing to do with popularity of the cola.
It is the actor that the commercial ends up popularising, instead of King Khan promoting the drink. "I love to watch Shah Rukh Khan's latest ad, but Pepsi is not my favourite drink," says Michael M Sailo, a top music artiste of the state. Sailo has become a celebrity in the north-east, his hip-hop numbers finding favour with locals, after he performed at the opening act of Michael Learns to Rock Shillong gig last year.Mahlimi, an avid fan of Hollywood films says, "For me Bollywood mainstream movies are not on. I never watch Shah Rukh's films, but I am a fan of his." Mahlimi like many other youths in Aizawl had seen Shah Rukh only in television commercials.Francis Z Paite, manager of Modern Book Stall, agrees, "I have never watched even a single movie of Shah Rukh Khan, but know who he is because I love his television commercials."The commercial which features the Bollywood blockbuster film Asoka's lead pair, Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor, has already garnered more fans than the film itself. The two Bollywood stars were seen breaking the ice together in the Pepsi commercial. Khan's fans know it is shot at Venice, Italy, which also features music composer and singer Adnan Sami and Mizo youths know him only through the Pepsi commercial.
